New Record, New Thoughts

It’s a whole new experience going into recording this time around. Honestly, not one of us can really even remember how it felt the first time we recorded in our living room of that broken down house in the city that we used to practice in. (That’s how long those first recording files sat untouchable on an equally broken down computer- years later, digging through folders while squinting at a very broken display, having to restart the machine a million times… it was an odd experience of a kind audio-archaeology- what did those tracks even sound like?) But all in all, it was, considering the name and themes of the record, the perfect place to record those songs- the technology breaking down even fits in the scheme here- despite the fact that we didn’t have the perfect equipment, or even always get perfect takes.

It feels like a brand new process this time around, excitingly unfamiliar. We didn’t make it easy for ourselves with our songwriting- there is maybe only a single track out of 13 on the whole record that doesn’t change time signatures at least once- but it was gratifying to realize the songs did all have very solid shape already that we all agreed on.

We’ve learned that taking on the challenges of recording really pushes us forward as a band- makes us consider our songs in new ways, allows us to step back and listen and hear what else could be there, forces us to make our songs take cohesive shape- and then pushes us to move on and start again with writing new ones.

Approaching this next record with more intention only makes us all the more eager for the finished product. And while going through this process, we haven’t been able to help but look beyond it. We’ve been talking a lot about song-writing, about great songs, and new ideas. It’s funny how solidifying past songs pushes you to think about future ones- like you’re simultaneously trying to hold yourself back to what you need to polish while not being able to help looking ahead to what hasn’t yet taken shape.

We are pleased to have come into our own as a band as we go through this recording process for our second full-length album, and we have so many ideas for what is to come on the third.

Good things are on the way. Thanks for taking this journey with us.

Oh- and here's Wesley's rendering of us. He likes to doodle comics.
